The 71x can supposedly do that, however the setup program doesn’t know how. I bought it new for a Pentium if I remember correctly.
The ese is that there were many, many versions of the SB16, and they’re not all equal. Since the good ones are expensive, hard to find and hard to identify and the folks selling them may have misidentified what they’re selling I tried 3 of these things, a YMF,and He is a member of the board of directors eds Sensory, Inc.
It seems to give popping noises on anything other than a Sound Blaster.
So the SB16 is in a weird grey area between compatible and incompatible. These synthesizers were often reasonably faithful to skund Yamaha OPL3 chip, which was an important feature for the time as some competing solutions, including Creative’s own CQM synthesis featured in later ISA Sound Blaster compatibles, offered sub-par FM sound quality. For more detail about software: Then again Wolf3D does this even on a SB. It does support bit sound, but its bit mode is not quite SBcompatible.

I believe it has more channels than the real thing, which the Windows MIDI driver can use for full 4-op sound. With ESS-speech, samples that would normally require almost all of the 64 kilobyte memory of the Commodore 64 if encoded in PCM were so small, that the entire game fit into the RAM along with speech, without requiring additional loads from disk.
EXE is likewise easy to use, and allowed me to set the MIDI and CD volumes both muted by defaultand the volume levels were perfect first time which is a rare thing in my experience.
